Description

Prolactin tests measure the levels of the hormone prolactin in the bloodstream. Prolactin is involved in a wide range of important physiological processes, including stimulating milk production in breastfeeding mothers, regulating the body’s metabolism, and controlling the release of other hormones in the body. Higher-than-normal levels of prolactin can be a sign of a health problem and can affect fertility in both men and women. By measuring prolactin levels in the blood, doctors can detect a wide range of health problems, including Pituitary Gland tumors, thyroid problems, stress, and infertility. It can also be used to diagnose and monitor the effectiveness of treatment for hormone imbalances, or to detect side effects of certain medications that affect prolactin levels. For hormone replacement therapy, a prolactin test is important because it can help assess how well a person’s body is responding to hormones. The test can help ensure the correct balance of hormones is being maintained in order to maintain overall health of the individual.
