Description

The Lipid Panel w/ Chol/HDL ratio is a blood test used to assess levels of certain lipids that are associated with heart health. It checks four different components of cholesterol – low density lipoproteins (LDL), high density lipoproteins (HDL), total cholesterol, and triglycerides, and also checks the ratio of cholesterol to HDL. This is important because levels of LDL and HDL, often referred to as ‘bad’ and ‘good’ cholesterol respectively, are important indicators of the risk of heart disease. High levels of LDL and low levels of HDL are associated with higher risk of heart disease, while high levels of HDL and low levels of LDL are associated with lower risk. The ratio of total cholesterol to HDL can also be a useful indicator of heart disease risk. The test is important for assessing the health of an individual because it provides important information about risk for heart disease, which is a leading cause of death in many countries.
