Description

Homocysteine tests are used to measure the amount of amino acids in the blood and can be used to assess an individual’s health. Homocysteine is an amino acid formed when another amino acid, methionine, is broken down in the body. The body needs methionine to make proteins and other molecules, so high levels of homocysteine may indicate that the body is not producing proteins in the right amounts. High levels of homocysteine can be a sign of heart disease, stroke, blood clots, and depression. Testing for homocysteine levels can help to diagnose certain health conditions and to monitor the effectiveness of treatments.
