Description

Estradiol tests measure the amount of estradiol, or estrogen, in the blood. Estrogens are a group of hormones that affect the development and maintenance of reproductive organs in both men and women. Levels of estradiol vary throughout life, and can be affected by pregnancy, menstrual cycle, age, and certain diseases, such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).Estradiol tests are important in assessing an individual’s health because it helps to determine if there is a hormone imbalance in the body. For example, if a woman’s estradiol levels are too high, it may indicate an overstimulation of the ovaries due to a hormone-secreting tumor, or PCOS. If the estradiol levels are too low, it may indicate an underproduction of the hormones, which can lead to infertility or bone loss. Estradiol levels are also tested in men to monitor the effects of certain treatments, such as testosterone replacement therapy. Estradiol tests can also provide important information about a person’s overall health. It is used as an indicator of other conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, or thyroid disorders. High or low levels of estradiol can be an early warning sign of potential health problems. Overall, estradiol tests are used to assess an individual’s hormone levels in order to help diagnose or monitor a variety of health conditions. It is an important part of evaluating the overall health of both men and women.
