Description

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT Free) and LC/MS tests are important biomarkers used to assess an individual’s overall hormone health. DHT, a hormone primarily found in men, is produced from testosterone and is a major contributor to male pattern baldness and other male development changes associated with puberty. Excessive DHT levels can also cause issues like excessive hair growth on the back, scalp, and chest, increased acne, and prostate enlargement. On the other hand, too little DHT can cause issues such as fatigue, depression, low libido, and erectile dysfunction. The DHT Free test measures the amount of DHT in the body by subtracting the amount of free DHT from the total amount of DHT. LC/MS (Liquid Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry) tests measure the amount of hormones in the body across multiple hormone levels. This includes testosterone, estrogen, and other related hormones. LC/MS is a more sensitive version of the traditional immunoassay (IA) testing method which is the standard method used in most medical laboratories. LC/MS is considered more accurate than IA since it measures hormones in the body more precisely. This method of testing is important for accurately determining hormone levels since fluctuations in hormone levels are common in individuals due to age, lifestyle factors, and medication/s. Having a better understanding of the individual’s hormone levels is essential in order to determine if hormone replacement therapy is needed.
