Description

Testosterone, total is a blood test used to measure the total amount of testosterone in the bloodstream. Testosterone is a male sex hormone, produced mainly in the testicles, that helps to develop and maintain the male reproductive system, including sexual characteristics and functions. It is also essential for other functions in both men and women, including maintaining proper bone and muscle mass and facial hair growth, as well as for mental and emotional well-being. In women, it helps to regulate menstrual cycles, promote fertility, maintain bone density, and produce healthy eggs for reproduction. When a person’s testosterone levels are low, the individual can suffer from a range of symptoms such as fatigue, low libido, difficulty concentrating, and depression. Low testosterone can also lead to poor muscle mass and weak bones, increased fat tissue accumulation, and decreased fertility. The Testosterone, total test will measure the overall level of testosterone in the bloodstream. If the level is below the range of what’s considered normal, hormone replacement therapy may be necessary to help alleviate symptoms and restore balance. This test may be used to assess an individual’s health and can be important when monitoring hormone replacement therapy.
