Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) is a protein produced in the liver that binds to and regulates the levels of testosterone and estrogen in the body. It is important for assessing an individual’s health because it indicates whether hormones are being utilized effectively and therefore can alert to any abnormal hormone levels. High levels of SHBG can indicate that there is too much of a particular hormone, such as estrogen, which can put a person at risk for many health issues such as breast cancer and infertility. Low levels can mean that testosterone levels are too low, which can result in various hormonal imbalances that can lead to issues such as depression, reduced libido, and infertility. A SHBG test is done to measure the levels of this protein in the blood and determine whether the hormones are being regulated correctly, in order to identify any potential risks or health concerns that the individual may have.
