Description

PSA Total & % Free (Reflex to Free) tests measure the levels of Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the blood. PSA is a protein produced by the prostate gland in both men and women and is generally used to screen for prostate cancer in men. The PSA Total test measures the overall amount of PSA in the blood and the % Free test measures the amount of PSA that is not bound to other proteins. The total PSA level can be affected by benign conditions such as an infection or inflammation of the prostate, while the free PSA level may be used to differentiate between an infection and the presence of cancer. These tests are important because they can help indicate the presence of prostate cancer at an early stage, allowing for early detection, diagnosis and treatment.
